The Fleisher Collection in Philadelphia, which is the world's largest library of orchestral scores and parts, accepted two of Stephen's scores: Finale from Two Together, an American Folk Music Suite" and "The Family of God" The library makes the scores and parts available to orchestras around the world for performances.
The library has a weekly radio show called "Discoveries from the Fleisher Collection". For their Labor Day broadcast, they chose "Finale" to be part of the show. Below is text from a bulletin that was sent to conductors all over the world about the broadcast:
Folk tunes have always played a big part in music we call “American,” and the contemporary composer Stephen Cohn has composed a lovely work at the request of a modern company, not unlike Strauss did 140 years ago. For a series of family-health-oriented CDs, Cohn put together a suite for various combinations of instruments, culminating in the orchestral Finale we hear today. It’s expertly done, and the Emmy-winning composer uses the instruments efficiently, showing the prowess he acquired writing for film, television, and Motown Records, as well as for ensembles such as the Arditti Quartet. Strauss, we think, would be proud.

Les Amis Musicalles, a trio consisting of Cindy Ellis, flute, Jeanne Strocki, violin and Jannet Lakatos, viola, commissioned Stephen to write five arrangments for them. The chosen works are: Gnossiene No.1 and Sonatine Bureaucratique by Satie, Pavanne pour une Infante Defunte by Ravel and two selections for Histoire du Tango by Piazzolla.
Stephen has just completed two arrangements for Meixican artist Tassinari who is a protege of Placido Domingo. Stephen has just completed giving a seminar at the New York Film Academy at Universal Studios. The title of the seminar is: A Director's Guide to Working with a Composer. As the title suggests, this is a class given to film directors from the point of view of a composer. It is an idea that Stephen has had for several years and was inspired by his observation that directors need to know how composers work in order to make effective plans for the scoring their films and in order to give composers good direction. After designing and teaching a class at UCLA Extension for six years intended for composers entitled, "Anatomy of a Film Score", Stephen noticed that this class was also being taken by directors - the light went on

On November 16, Stephen gave a concert/lecture presentation at the Shumei Arts Council Auditorium in Pasadena, Califronia for 350 third grade children. The presentation entitled "The Magical Creation of a New Piece of Music", was aimed at demonstrating how a composer conceives of and writes a new work. Stephen used a trio for flute, viola and cello he had written recently for a friend's wedding as an example. He was fortunate enough to be able to hire three superb young musicians from the USC Thorton School of Music: Jessica Pierce, flute, Renata Van de Vyer, viola and Mia Barcia-columbo, cello.
The children were an exceptionally bright and musical group who were very attentive and asked some wonderful questions in the Q&A after the talk. It was a great experience for all involved.

"The Family Of God" for choir and chamber orchestra was premiered at Merkin Hall, New York on November 5th.
Last year, Stephen was commissioned to write a new work for choir and chamber orchestra. The sponsoring organization, Universal Sacred Music, has a mission to create a repertoire of choral music which is spiritual but not religious.
The text was created by taking quotes from a number of religious works from various cultures and setting them along side of each other to show that they all seem to refer to the same One Source of all Life and that they all expressed the same core spiritual values. Thus, the divisions we make between us are false and contrary to what the great spiritual thinkers have been telling us since the beginning.
The ensemble consisted of thrity two voices and nine instrumentalists.
Stephen has recently completed composing and producing music for a new web site promoting a novel about to be released. The novel, entitled "Nail Through The Heart", will be published by the William Morrow Company and was written by Tomothy Hallinan who was a member of the rock and roll band which was Stephen's first professional endeavor in the music business.
The novel is a powerful and soulful mystery that takes place in Thailand. Stephen used Thai instruments samples along with western orchestral instrument samples in creating the music for the site. There are three compositions: Main Title, Rose, and The Superman Chase. Reuniting forces with Tim Hallinan, an old and valued friend, was a great inspiration for Stephen in this project.

Stephen's composition, "Finale, from Two Together, An American Folk Music Suite was performed by the Kansas City Symphony on March 25th. The concert originally scheduled for January 21 was played at the Midland Theater in Kansas City to an full capacity audience of 2,600 people. Stephen participated in the rehearsal on Friday the 24th and then attended the concert on the 25th.
The orchestra, under the direction of Timothy Hankewich, did a beautiful reading of the piece. Stephen was called to the stage for a bow and was blinded by a wall of white light as he turned to face the audience. The work was very well received.

Three of Stephen's chamber works were performed in Europe during this last summer. "Eye Of Chaos" for string quartet and "Anticipation Of Light" for Violin, cello and piano were played at the International Musical Encounters of Catalonia in Ceret, France in August. "Matin Sur Les Collines De Ceret" for violin duet was performed at the Otzberg Summer Concerts in Germany in September. Below are reviews of these concerts:
>From L’Independant, Ceret, France - August 17, 2004
Review by Charles Greiveldinger-Winling
Translated from French:
"Eye of Chaos." This "Eye of Chaos" by Stephen Cohn is a magnificent work; at the beginning tense and serious with gravity and importance, overwhelming , infinitely sad ; and whose continuation becomes extraordinary - shooting pain, torn asunder. Thus it oscillates between temptations of sweetness and the dizziness of anguish, attempting to escape from present times into dark reminiscences.
"Anticipation of Light". This World Premiere of Stephen Cohn, performed by Dolly Kessner on piano, and two musicians from Amar Corde (violin and cello) brings to mind a rainy day, happy, a peaceful intimacy; certainly marked now and then by a streak of restlessness, but also of bounding insouciance, of gratitude. It closes on a suspended meditation.
>From the Otzberg Summer Concerts in Germany in September:
In the Newspaper "Darmstaedter Echo" : (translated badly from German)
...It happened not less breathtaking and was very diversified up to the interlude. Kinneret Sieradzki (Violin) together with Annette von Hehn played ?Matin sur les collines de Ceret„, a duo for violins from Stephen Cohn, a composer living in California. The first performance in Germany in the fully crowded „hall of chevaliers has been received with enthusiasm. In the short character piece, dedicated to the city of Ceret in the Pyrenees, the two violins entered in a exquisite dialogue which was performed intensively by the two women.
In the Newspaper "Main-Echo": (translated badly from German)
Sun over the Pyrenees landscape
As a First performance in Germany, Kinneret Sieradzki and Annette von Hehn presented with their violins the duo "Matin Sur Les Collines De Ceret" from Stephen Cohn . In this piece, soft and tender, the sun rises over this Pyrenees landscape in the south of France, which has impressed the composer deeply emotional who has spent some time rambling in this area - as he said. Very slowly the daybreak is raising gently whirring, until penetrating intonations in the descant are illustrating the final sunrise. Profound dreamings can be felt, which brace up for a heaviness of symphony and finally vanish weightless. Colourful melodic and free floating tonality was very well received by the audiance.

"Matin Sur Les Collines De Ceret", a violin duet Stephen composed for the 1996 festival in Ceret, France and revised for the 2002 festival in Ceret, was performed for the first time in Germany at the Otzberger Summer Concerts on September 19. It was played by young Israeli vionist, Kinneret Sieradski along with Annette von Hehn. There were two excellent reviews from two different newspapers which will be posted on this site under "Press" on the "Home" page. The audience reaction was reported to be enthusiastic.

Stephen is very excited to announce a new musical collaboration with an old friend, Angel Romero.
Angel Romero is hailed as the Spanish maestro of the guitar. A New York Times review said "What Heifitz was to the violin, Horowitz to the piano, so is Angel Romero to the guitar. Incomparable!"
In demand for his extraordinary artistry, both musically and aesthetically as guitarist and conductor, Maestro Romero performs regularly in major cultural centers worldwide, including those in London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Madrid, Munich, Zurich, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. He has appeared as recitalist and soloist with such leading orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw and the Miami Symphony in Carnegie Hall.
His extensive discography includes recordings on Angel/EMI, Telarc, Seraphim, Mercury, RCA Victor Red Seal, RCA Victor Worldwide and currently Delos International. His recordings of classical guitar repertoire include works from the Renaissance through the twentieth century, with many works by Bach, Rodrigo's much loved Concierto Aranjuez, and compositions by Lalo Schifrin and Bill Conti.
In addition, Angel is notable for his activities in the movie industry. He performed the entire score for The Milagro Bean Field War, directed by Robert Redford. He composed and conducted the score for Gabriele Retes film Bienvenido-Welcome, for which he won the 1995 ARIEL (the Oscar type award for Mexico) for best score. He also performed the entire score for the film By The Sword, composed by Bill Conti.
Angel and Stephen have been friends since adolescence. They met when Stephen began studying classical guitar with Angel's legendary father Celedonio. They spent a great deal of time together, both pursuing their musical interests and socially. Stephen traveled with the Romero Family to many of their concerts and also stayed with the family on many holidays at their vacation home in Santa Barbara.
After being out of touch for a while, Angel and Stephen met again at one of Angel's concerts. Still feeling a kinship and marveling at the musical growth and success of each of their careers, Angel suggested a collaboration. He had received many requests to write film scores and although he had found time to do some of them, the demands of his concert tours had prevented him from doing more. Clearly, music written with and for a uniquely expressive soloist, such as Angel, adds extraordinary depth to the dramatic quality of a film score, as it did in "Schindler's List" and "The Red Violin". Stephen's knowledge of the guitar, along with his extensive and highly successful background as an award winning composer and orchestrator, combined with his long-standing friendship with Angel, makes the collaboration an inevitable and exciting new direction in film music.
Angel and Stephen's creative synergy and long-standing camaraderie, as well as their love of the film medium, will produce passionate and wonderful film music.

On November 6, 7, and 8, Stephen produced a score for the film "Charlottes Web II", a Universal/Paramount direct to video release. The score was composed by Micheal Tavera and was recorded in Prague at ICN Studio. Stephen and Michael were in Prague for a week to do the recordings; this was Michael's first trip to Prague and Stephen's third trip this year (All three trips were for for the purpose of recording music). Stephen's assistant, Stephanie Wukovitz, was proofreader for the project, which was orchestrated and copied using the Sibelius music notation program.
Thursday, October 17, 2002
In August, Stephen traveled to Europe for two projects. He was "Composer in Residence" at The International Musical Encounters Of Catalogne. At this festival in the south of France, three of his compositions were performed: a woodwind trio entitled "Evolution and Remembrance", a violin duet entitled Matin Sur Les Collines Des Ceret, and a piano piece entitled "Moods Of A Goddess". The festival was a very successful and also a very intense creative experience.
Stephen then went to Prague, where he met his assistant Stephanie Wukovitz, to record an album for At Peace Media. The album is enitled "American Folk Music Suite." It consists of six pieces for small chamber ensembles, each of which is a theme and variations on a well known American folk song. Then the suite culminates in a finale for orchestra which brings together the main themes of the suite. There is also a short orchestral overture. Upon returning to Los Angeles, Stephen edited and mixed the album with the wonderful assistance of composer and friend Daniel May at Daniel's studio in Long Beach. The album will be released by At Peace media early next year. In the meantime, the same label will release an album of holiday relaxation music that Stephen finished earlier this year, entitled "Holly and Ivy".
The work on Lalo Schrifrin's commissioned work for the Chicago Symphony is now complete.
Stephen's new assignment is to produce a film score for his friend, composer Michael Tavera. Michael and Stephen will travel to Prague for the recording sessions in early November.

Stephen has published music by his father, Morris E. Cohn on the Sibeliusmusic.com site. Stephen's father was a successful attorney who practiced in Los Angeles. In the fifties, he was Chief Counsel for The Screen Writers Guild and defended writers who were called in front the House Un-American Activities Committee. He also worked with Frank Sinatra on the sale of Reprise Records to Warner Bros.and had many other notable accomplishments as an attorney. His real love, however, was composing music, which he did in every spare moment. He was a highly intelligent and sensitive man, and these qualities are revealed in his music. Stephen promised his father, shortly before he died, that he would attempt to get some of this music published. Two of Morris E. Cohn's piano pieces are now published on the
Sibelius Music web site. Stephen is very glad to be able to honor his father's work in this way.
Saturday, July 06, 2002
It has been a while since this page has been updated, and a lot has happened since then.
Stephen continues to work with Lalo Schifrin on Lalo's commission for the Chicago Symphony; the piece is in its final stages of completion. While this project has progressed, Stephen has also done orchestrations for composer-friend Michael Tavera on his score for "Land Before Time IX", an animated sequel which will be released by Universal Video. He has been assisted on both these projects by Stephanie Wukovitz.
Also during this period Stephen has completed a woodwind trio, "Evolution and Remembrance", and a violin duet, "Matin Sur Les Collines De Ceret". Along with a piano work entitled "Moods Of A Goddess", these pieces will be performed at a festival in Ceret (in the south of France) in August. Stephen will be composer-in-residence at this festival.
Stephen has also completed an album of Christmas relaxation music to be released on CD later this year by
AT Peace Media. He recently began work on a new CD of music for mothers and children, to be released by the same company as a part of their new expanded marketing. This album will be recorded in Prague while Stephen is in Europe in August and will make use of small orchestra and chamber ensembles.
Stephen has moved from North Hollywood to Burbank. His email address remains the same:
scohnmusic@earthlink.net. However, hIs phone number has changed; if you call the old number you will be referred to the new one.

Stephen has been invited to be Composer in Residence at the International Musical Encounters of Catalogne, a music festival which will be held in Ceret, a small city in the south of France from August 18th to the 25th, this coming summer. He has accepted the invitation. Three of his works will be performed and he will give talks on American Music and will participate in round-table discussions with artists from France and Poland. Ceret is near the coast and is also very close to the Spanish border. It was one of Picasso's favorite places to work. A small museum there contains works by Picasso which he painted in Ceret.
In May Stephen will be orchestrating music for a "Land Before Time" sequel for video release. The music will be composed by Stephen's friend, Michael Tavera.
Saturday, April 20, 2002
